The purpose of this training is to reduce re-victimization and build vital trust between survivor and first responder. \nThe purpose of this training is to reduce re-victimization and build vital trust between survivor and first responder. \nPanelist include Alia El-Sawi\, Victim Assistance Specialist with Homeland Security Investigations and Maja Hasic\, Anti-Human Trafficking Program Director with Tapestri. \n  \nAlia El-Sawi is the Victim Assistance Specialist for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)\, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). In this capacity\, she designs and provides educational trainings and outreach to law enforcement\, attorneys\, mainstream service providers\, and community-based organizations on human trafficking and child exploitation. Alia conducts victim interviews and assists victims in obtaining a form of temporary immigration relief available to human trafficking survivors. \nPrior to her work with ICE\, Alia was the Anti-Human Trafficking Program Coordinator at Tapestri\, Inc. As such\, she provided trainings\, outreach and direct services/case management to foreign born survivors of human trafficking. Alia served as the Chair of the Department of Health and Human Services’ Rescue & Restore Board for 3 years and as the Freedom Network’s Social Service Committee Chair for 3 years. Alia received her B.A. degrees in International Affairs and French from Mercer University and her master’s degree from Boston University in Criminal Justice with a focus in Victimology. In this role\, she provided culturally appropriate legal advocacy to foreign national survivors of domestic violence as well as training on domestic violence. Before joining Tapestri\, she served as a Medicaid Eligibility Specialist with the Department of Family and Children Services. Originally from Ecuador\, Ms. Leon is fluent in Spanish and earned the equivalent of a US bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador. DESCRIPTION:Overview of Labor Trafficking \n\nThe Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000 (TVPA) defines labor trafficking as: “The recruitment\, harboring\, transportation\, provision\, or obtaining of a person for labor or services\, through the use of force\, fraud or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude\, peonage\, debt bondage or slavery.”\n\nThe extent of labor trafficking in the state of Georgia is still unknown due to complexities of the crime and misidentification with other forms of abuse. The diverse geographic landscape in the state of Georgia is one of the contributing factors to increased prevalence of labor trafficking. \nPlease join us for an Overview of Labor Trafficking Training on January 19th from 2-3 pm EST.. During this training\, participants will learn how to identify labor trafficking cases\, relevant laws that address labor trafficking and labor exploitation\, and hear about labor trafficking case examples. \nPanelist include Sir Streeter\, Georgia Coalition to Combat Human Trafficking Coordinator with Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and Maja Hasic\, Human Trafficking Program Director with Tapestri. \nSir Streeter currently serves as the Coordinator for the Georgia Coalition to Combat Human Trafficking. The Coalition is the first statewide law enforcement-based task force addressing all forms of human trafficking; domestic minor sex trafficking\, adult sex trafficking and labor trafficking. In addition to his duties as the Coordinator of the Coalition\, Sir has now taken on the duties of coordinating the newly formed Howard G. Buffet Foundation Agricultural Labor Trafficking Task Force. This task force addresses agricultural labor trafficking which exists within the middle and southern portions of the state of Georgia. Prior to Sir’s role as Coordinator\, he worked for 30 years with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the legacy Immigration and Naturalization Service. During his time with HSI\, Sir served in the roles of Chief of the HSI Training Division at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC)\, Assistant Special Agent in Charge HSI California Central Valley\, Section Chief of Basic Training and as the HSI Group Supervisor of the Human Trafficking and Human Smuggling Group in Atlanta Georgia. Sir has worked as a Special Agent and supervisor over several projects involving anti-trafficking efforts to include standing up the Atlanta Anti-Trafficking Coordination Team or ACTeam which included the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia\, the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the Department of Labor (DOL). Sir is a native of New York City\, but has made his home in Georgia for over 25 years. \nMaja Hasic serves as the Anti-Human Trafficking Program Director with Tapestri Inc.\, a non-profit social service agency that works with survivors of violence from the immigrant and refugee community. Ms. Hasic designs and provides trainings and outreach to mainstream service providers\, law enforcement\, and community organizations on human trafficking on a local\, state-wide\, and national basis.
